InDesign is the software that puts it all together - a top-end design application that rivals QuarkXPress without the high price. It offers phenomenal new technology that allows you to drag and drop native PhotoShop, Illustrator, and PDFs directly onto a page, preserving transparency! Through its integration with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat software, InDesign CS2 helps you produce printed pages quickly and output them reliably.
PhotoShop is the image-editing application that allows you to scan or import images; enhance; crop; mask; collate; filter; and so forth until you are satisfied with the result. Since it is the choice of professionals, many of its features are complex and powerful, and need expert tuition. (Many professionals don't know many of its features!)
The ability to export specifically for the Web makes PhotoShop an all-round product, and now Adobe Creative Suite also include Fireworks! This wonderful application creates animated GIFs; imports movies and converts them into animated GIFs. Photoshop now integrates very well with Dreamweaver, allowing copy and pasting of layered images into Dreamweaver with optimisation choices.
A list of Photoshop terms:
Illustrator is the line-art drawing application that all graphic designers use for its excellent type effects; superb shape manipulation; and high-quality Postscript artwork. The latest version is extremely suited for the creation of Web graphics. Convert bitmap images to scalable, editable artwork in seconds. Take your graphics to print, the Web, video, and mobile devices.
Acrobat is the tool to enhance 'pdf' files with hyperlinks, annotations, movies, sounds, etc; and should be used by all companies who email documents to clients.
Bridge is Adobe's answer to the problem of finding images (and other resources) quickly and efficiently. They estimate that professionals spend 30% of their time LOOKING for the correct image. With Bridge, images of all types - including Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign files - appear with quality thumbnails that make finding the image faster.
The thumbnails are able to be resized (from tiny to quite large) using a slider control; they may be rated from none to five stars; 'favorite' files and folders are easily located; and files may be easily filtered to show only those files that meet the criteria required (such as image orientation, image resolution, image type, etc).
Version Cue addresses the issue of management of multiple versions of files - allowing them to be saved with the same name as the original, yet keeping the original (hidden unless necessary). Old versions may be reinstated to the current version if required.
"Projects' are created, and administered, in a web-browser interface - with security features such as passwords and limitations.
Adobe has recently purchased Macromedia, and now the Creative Suite includes the applications Dreamweaver, Flash, Fireworks, Contribute, and others. They have been better integrated into the remainder of the Creative Suite - allowing Photoshop files to be iembedded in webpages and edited directly, for instance.
Dreamweaver™ is the application many Web developers prefer to use when building sites. It has the ability to create 'Dynamic HTML' - which involves 'layers' that can move and change visibility; and Cascading Style Sheets that control the appearance and positioning of all text and objects on the page.
It links beautifully with the other Creative Suite applications for the total Web solution.
Flash is the wave of the future for websites - animation, sound and fantastic effects are easily created on a timeline that allows sounds and animated buttons to be placed within 'movie clips'. Layers of different graphics can be built, allowing total control over placement and visibility. The results are exported to files that can be easily placed on a webpage (using Dreamweaver, for instance). The original files are not on the webpage, so cannot be copied and re-used.
Libraries of graphics and movie clips are stored within documents, and can even be shared between documents.
FireWorks™ is one of the new Adobe® Web-authoring applications that has taken the lead in creation of graphics for the World Wide Web. It allows graphic designers to layout a page using familiar techniques; add rollover buttons; add links; and then 'slice' the page into chunks that are reassembled in an HTML table. All this is exported from Fireworks in a single action. Any updating of the Fireworks original will then update the HTML with a single menu command!
Here's the main features of Fireworks (as described by Adobe®):
"Create animated rollovers and pop-up menus with Fireworks's intuitive visual tools, and utilize round-trip editing capabilities with Dreamweaver and Flash for greater efficiency.
Get top-quality design results.
Take creative control with seamless vector and bitmap editing in an integrated
environment.
Produce highly optimized files that still look great.
Make graphics look their best under any delivery scenario with optimization
features like export, preview, cross-platform gamma preview, and selective JPG
compression.
Slice and export page comps.
Slice up a Fireworks page layout and export the entire page, or selected slices
(including graphics, HTML, and code for rollover effects) to an HTML editor
(such as Dreamweaver or Microsoft FrontPage).
Create sophisticated web navigation.
Automatically generate graphics and JavaScript for buttons, interactive interfaces,
and pop-up menus without learning how to write code." (Source: Macromedia

Contribute allows those with no Dreamweaver experience to add text and graphic content to Dreamweaver templates using a web browser interface. This is a very effective (and cheap) way of keeping your website up-to-date. Much less training is required, and far less risk of damage to the site by inexperienced users.
"Still the fastest way to build and deploy powerful Internet applications, ColdFusion MX 7 introduces powerful new application services including rich Flash forms generation, structured reports, and dynamic generation of printable documents. It opens up a new world of applications beyond the browser." (Source: Macromedia website)
FrameMaker is the premier technical publishing solution for those users who demand sophisticated word-processing features with the power of desktop publishing. Single-source publishing is made easy with Framemaker. XML editing features, and DITA support built-in.
